There are four known inscriptions that date to the time of ancient Israel, and mention the "House of David". As a result, historians and archeologists widey agree that the biblical figure, King David, lived around 1000 BCE.
David was a shepherd, a musician and a warrior. It is also believed that he was the author of the Book of Psalms. He is richly represented in Jewish post-biblical tradition, the New Testament and the Quran, which states that he was one of the major prophets sent by God to guide the Israelites.
The inscription in the painting is from Psalms 23:6 (תהילים), and is written in Paleo Hebrew, which was the alphabet used by the Israelites at the time of David. It reads:
אך טוב וחסד ירדפוני כל ימי חיי
